Whenever I add a spotlight, I add an empty for it to be tracked to. Doesn't everybody? Why not have an options to add 'spotlight w/empty' , giving you a spotlight already tracked to an empty? Maybe the same option for cameras, since I think empties are the only way to control those as well. Just a thought I had; might save a few seconds a day ;)
