Awesome results!
It would have look better if more polygon detail could have been given to
certain areas such as the nose and top of the head, and in the 500 triangle
version - the top of the ear. On the front view there aren't problems
(besides the ears) with the 500 poly version though... maybe the reduced
version was mainly based on the front view.
Anyway, normal maps have been used in a lot of games lately and I suggest
that the game engine also support them. (Ideally blender should be the only
program you need to create the normal maps and low-poly meshes in the first
place)
