Cambell, you do realise you can smoth parts of a mesh without spitting it up
right?

try this create a cube.  Extrude the left side out and back from the camera.
Then do the same on the right.
Render and notice the sharp edges.

          |    |    |    |
          .----.----.----.
                       ^
                      select everything left of the ^ in edit mode
			and click set smooth 

then re render.
