I didn't think about 100+ item menus... that would be yet another reason why
my ctrl-T, etc, pop-up menu idea isn't very good.
As far as making the active item clearer in non-wire modes goes - I think
the wire colour for the active item is white, then the selected active item
should become very bright (so that the dark shaded parts are brightened as
well) - or if the wireframe active item is red, the non-wireframe active
item could have a red glow. If the shaded object is already red, it would
still look different because the dark parts of the object would become
lighter red.

Those 5 points sound good. BTW, my pop-up menu idea is something that I
agreed had problems with some of the time, though I was defending it anyway.
As far as your point 2 goes (The "Active" state is a subset of the
"Selected" state)
