Of course, I know all of these points and I agree with
them. Like you might have noticed (or not), I never
suggested to go back to the old way, I merely said
that this one is less visible. A good way to solve
this is to change the color for this type of buttons
in your user theme, so that's not a major problem. 
Like you said, this is all work in progress.

On a side note, I think the databrowse button should
be replaced by a "NEW" button when no data is present.
IMHO, this is much more intuitive for beginners than
going through a browse button (especially since
there's no indication that it's used to add new
materials) and it's faster for everyone. The Add New
entry in the browse menu should stay there though.
