The way Max approached this was to highlight the last used command like you
say, but have a small yellow square right next to where the cursor appears,
which was 'repeat last command' - so effectivly you could just rightclick,
leftclick to get the last command used - you could implement something like
this, have a small blank section at the centre, that is colour coded the
same as the highlighting of the last used commant (to create a visual link)
