[Bf-education] Bf-education Digest, Vol 77, Issue 3

Hi Matt,

I appreciate your suggestions and would welcome any notes you would be willing to share. I think your point is well taken because any student going into any of the entertainment or gaming industries will need to know a little about everything and then attempt to keep up in what is being used or developed. Staying on the cutting edge is one thing developing your own curve is where the challenge will be for our young people.

In my department, which is a four-year program, students are introduced to layout, digital photography, Web Design, Animation (Blender), film production and editing, and special effects. Besides Blender I use another free program called Celtx (Celtx.com), which I have found exceptional for organizing storyboards, scripts, sound clips and documents. It has a calendar so the boys start learning more about project management too!

My hope is to introduce motion capture soon. This will add one more dimension to the animation program. Thanks again for your offer and support. I hope to return the favor soon. Take care, Peter

Hi Peter

I'm an animator and effects artist by trade and have been working in the TV
industry for the last 24 years. During that time I've used all the major 3d
packages (Softimage, Maya, Max, Lightwave etc.) and many of the effects
packages (After Effects, Matador, Digital Fusion etc.) Recently my company
has also started making games for the likes of the BBC as well as releasing
our first iPhone game.

I think Blender now stands up against the industry standard packages well.
It is now possible to produce broadcast or film quality productions with
free software.

The fact that it also integrates with a game engine so seamlessly is
astonishing and I think that as a package it will begin to gain more
credibility within the film, TV and games industries very soon.

Consequently, giving your students a brief taster of the entire package
would be a good first step in my humble opinion, then allowing them to
choose an area to specialise in. I know that doesn't make it easy for you,
having to be an expert in all disciplines, sorry.

I'm attempting to put a "course" together myself for school kids here in the
UK, I will send you my notes when they are written up if you wish?

cheers

Matt

I am teaching a Blender 2.62 course to my seniors in this last quarter. If
all works well next year, the course will spring into a full semester. I am
not sure, at this time, if I should move more into gaming or video
compositing with motion capture. Any thoughts?

Hi, Peter and Matt -

I am so excited to hear that the two of you are working on further developing course content for Blender. My program currently teaches Blender to elementary and high school students here in the States. We use it now for video game development. But, I am also interested in having them integrate it with Film.

I would love to learn more about your ventures and results.
