I wanted to add somethings.
ManCandy is great for learning rigging too.
Don't waste your time with learning to do good textures yet, instead use the
stuff on Blender Open Materials Website (it says the site is closed but this
is not quite true. The old link is there.)

Just like programming don't reinvent the wheel. For learning animation get
other peoples rigs and play with them. Mancandy and the other models from
the blender films are a great start for this.
The best open source film editor I have found is still Blender.
