This is great news!
At this very moment me and my colleague are giving a blender course for
scientific visualization (in Amsterdam) and have had to disappoint a
number of researchers that work with volumetric data. There is
definitely demand/interest in general volume data support for Blender as
well, not just Cycles, judging by publications like
https://arxiv.org/pdf/1611.06965.pdf (a 14-page description on how to
use the Blender Voxel format when using BI rendering). So any steps
forward in getting more general volume data and rendering support in
Blender and Cycles would be awesome!
Btw, if the GSOC student would like to test with scientific volumetric
data at some point then we can easily provide test sets.
