Thanks for the answer Brecht.

Would it be possible to have a system to combine two renders and that 
would give the same result as rendering them in one go, or is that not 
possible with Path tracing?
If I remember correct, Luxrender has it's own .flm format, which can be 
combined with the LuxMerger.
