Hi all,
I added a new idea to the list:

http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Dev:Ref/GoogleSummerOfCode/2014/Ideas#Multi-Layer_Image_Handling

This came up while we were implementing PSD (Photoshop) files support
and I think it could be a nice Summer project if some student is
interested.

The ideal goal in my opinion would extrapolate Blender coding. The
project would work great if the student can implement OpenRaster into
OpenImageIO. I think we had similar cases in the past where a project
touches more than one Foundation. So I believe it should be fine.

Optionally, Krita or Gimp could point a student into this direction.
In the ideal world I would love to see a student working for better
ORA integration in Gimp, a Krita student implementing ORA in
OpenImageIO and another student implementing multi-layer support in
Blender. I don't have contacts in the other organizations though, so
won't bother trying to pull that off this time. But as far as
time-budget goes, I think multi-layer in Blender + extending OIIO
makes for a nice Summer.

I would be willing to mentor (or co-mentor) such a project, so I
thought it was worth thinking out loud in case it picks someone's
interest in those last 20 hours.

* PS: for someone from Krita reading this: Even if now we don't get
Multi-Layer support in Blender, it would be really easy/quick to
implement ORA support for Blender once ORA is supported in
OpenImageIO. Even if as a flatten down image, as we do for PSD.

All the best,
Dalai
