It seems Blender 2.71 does not run on older Windows (tested on XP) without VC2013-Redistributable. We have to update the advise on the download page to: "If Blender reports an error on startup, please install the Visual C++ 2013 Redistributable Package. 32bit / 64bit" thanks, migius
