My 2 bits: trackball has always gave me frustrations, because I ended up looking on the scene "lying on the floor"/upside-down after every view rotation :) Manipulator is very useful, because you can see in what coordinate system you'll be transforming the objects, or what direction the object's axes are pointing to.
