Yes.

Yes, but the default is what most users will use and it is what
teachers and tutorials will most likely be using. Changing it does put
a big hole in old leaning materials but if it is a good improvement
then I think we should do it. So far no one has said anything against
this but one laptop user. I feel it is good to wait and learn more but
this seems to be a good idea.

Although this sounds good and provides flexibly, it makes life hard
when you go to help someone and all the keys are different for each
person. A well made default that is used by most is a very good thing.

Yes.

Not really, most users start learning with the default and stick to it
unless there is a very good reason to change it.

I thought a new team formed last month to improve the UI and
usability? What are they up to? I guess they were not official and
that is what you are referring to but still they were off to a strong
start. This idea seems to be right in line with what they had started.
