[Bf-committers] Texture compression for renderer?

In the recent time i often used DDS for textures, which has the 
advantage to load textures that are four or even six times as big while 
using the amount of RAM. So i wonder if it would be possible to do the 
same thing with textures for rendering. Especially Cycles is quickly RAM 
limited on a GPU, while textures usually consume the biggest amount of 
memory. Wouldn't it make sense to implement DDS or something similar for 
textures, so that we can trade some amount of rendering time vs. higher 
resolution textures?
