I fully agree with this proposal especially compatibility, because of 
sites like blendswap and blenderartists, if people start posting models 
all over the place with bmesh, and someone who has not updated will be 
in for a shock, not to mention debian and ubuntu are always a few 
releases behind, so at least some compatibility would be wise.

however 1 thing does spring to mind, mango sprint which if my maths is 
correct, it will be 2.63, and when 2.64 rolls around, mango will be in 
full swing, so something needs to be coordinated in that respect
