There are 2 bugs in 2.57 which might make 2.57a worthwhile (both fixed in SVN).

[#26930] Blender 2.57 Shuts down when trying to edit 3D text
http://projects.blender.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498&aid=26930&group_id=9
--- Entering editmode on text would crash on a OSX only.

[#26933] Render Crash with Decimate Modifier
http://projects.blender.org/tracker/?func=detail&atid=498&aid=26930&group_id=9
--- Would crash any time orco's were not available, error in new
tangent space code.

Another problem:
Linux build is from r36147, but the tag shows r36148 as the last change.
https://svn.blender.org/svnroot/bf-blender/tags/blender-2.57-release/

The bug fixed r36148 stopped files with image space grease pencil in
2,4x from crashing on load.
https://projects.blender.org/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=26950&group_id=9&atid=498

I didn't check other build revisions but if they are not from r36148
or newer they'll have this problem too.

Normally we give this 1 week, so something to bring up this Sunday meeting.
