Ton,

If you have not already, please recommend to him that he run Photorec on 
the drive which contained the Blender installation.  Photorec is capable 
of recovering deleted .blend files.  The names of the files will be 
lost, but that is unimportant in a situation like this.

It is important that he run Photorec as soon as possible, since the 
operating system will begin reusing the disk space occupied by the 
"deleted" .blend files which are now marked for overwrite.
