I don't really use makefiles, so I probably shouldn't really comment.

If this commit only suppresses the long-winded commands used to
actually build the files, then +1. That's great, since I really don't
like to see what commands are being executed in great detail, making
it harder to see the warnings themselves.

It's not so great however if it suppresses all information about what
file is being compiled apart from when warnings show up. That is, it
should only show
"Compiling 'somefile'" or "Up to date 'somefile'"
