--shadow pass

useful for compositing 3D + live footage. Nope, don't throw that away.
Haven't tested shadow only material layer mentioned above as a
solution, but it doesn't sound very user-friendly.


--envmaps
The reflection equivalent of shadow-maps. If keeping the latter, why
not the former too? Besides they are quite fast to render!
Especially useful for games, good use-case is baking textures.
Actually there are quite many envmap face setups used in games and I'd
like to see them integrated to blender sometime. See for instance
