The thing about alternate naming is not only for Maya/Max users.

Being a AutoCAD user for a long time I got used to the aliases for the main
command names. According to your use of the program you tend to set the main
commands for the short names. e.g. some people prefer copy to be C while
others prefer circle to use this command name (leaving cp for example for
copy).
