So why not embed a IRC client on www.blender.org, or provide a link to a 
web based IRC client like Mibbit (or whatever freenode will accept) with 
the channel already set up.   People go to blender.org looking for 
support, just lead them to where the live support actually is without 
making them install any software.  Be sure to post etiquette rules next 
to the link in big flashing letters ;)
