Can you elaborate on the setup just a bit?

The end goal would be to use the uv projection modifier to project a 
matte painting onto a mesh and use additional projection modifiers to 
project over the stretched areas of the mesh.

So ideally if you could project the original image onto the mesh and 
then paint out the stretched areas with the alpha erase brush exposing 
the other projected image.

Sound possible?
