I recommend out-of-the-source-tree builds, almost like Kent suggested.

AFAIK the blender cmake system does not yet have an install target. (and
neither do the old NaN Makefiles, however these do have a release target
that builds a package.)

I use cmake and think the blender cmake system deserves more attention.
