having the eyes separated from the head is good to explain mesh basics to beginners.
You can quickly show that a mesh can be made of different parts, and how to
select those parts (example: select a vertex of an eye and press L to
select the whole eye), without confusing people adding a mesh 'inside' a mesh.

If an user doesn't know how to produce a 'multi-parts' meshes himself, he 
can just add a Suzanne and press tab :)
