It does, you have the compress file option on when you save a file, it
will compress it, and that 'compressed' status will be kept in the
file. To change it from compressed to uncompressed after that,
deselect the 'compressed' option when saving it next time. The initial
compression state for saving new files comes from the user
preferences.
