Hmm, I should look into the 'ar' thing closer then. From what I gather
is that stock mingw doesn't understand this syntax (see commit log). I
may be mistaken about ar, though (but would find it odd if 'ar'
supported it but ie. 'gcc' not, both being installed from the same
package).
