(trivia Q:
who here knows the right combination of sliders to get a basic,
correct looking glass in Blender atm? is it even possible?). 

I use the Blender Materials Library. haha. But you are correct, with the current array of panels and sliders and swatches, there are two drawbacks:
1) if it's not the right "glass", then the user does not know what to modify it to get what they want
2) if there is nothing close in their library to get what they want, they are at a loss. 

But even in that your point still holds; green glass has not been updated for the latest Ray Transparency additions.
