Ya, tried all that. Using Gnome. 

ps -glad u like the sig. I stole it from a lawyer that sued me. Quite a story and a philosophy going on there :)

Usual fixes to try are:

- turn of compiz, kde4 desktop effects or other compositing window managers
- use the vendor driver rather than the open source on
- sometimes running Blender windowed vs full screen helps

It alwasy cracks me up to see .sigs like this on mail that gets publicly
archived on the web.
