Speaking of MIPSpro: Members of SGI's Developer Plus program can get a free 
license. Unfortunately, one has to be a company to become a member of that 
program.

Nevertheless, being able to compile blender on Irix with gcc has it's merits 
as well, as that compiler is free and easily available.
