I don't know if it's still the case, but the Windows version of Gimp
used to use to put it's config in a directory whose name began with a
"." I never ran into any trouble with it myself, perhaps it's only
recent versions of Windows that choke on "." files.
 (I haven't used Blender or Gimp in Windows in years myself).
