Does this affect backbuffer select?  For example, can you paint 
"through" a foreground object? Seems that could get confusing.

> Yup, that's another way to get things drawing on top. Part of the reasoning to disable it is that before it was impossible to see things in front, while now you can choose and still draw the object on top if you want.
