It didn't make any difference to this problem on my system. With Ton's
assistance on irc we narrowed it down to the type of buffer swapping
that my ATI radeon mobility x1300 uses in Ubuntu. There isn't an option
in the ATI Catalyst driver to change from exchange to copy buffers and
so far the only thing that works is to enable anti aliasing which forces
full buffer updates (but is not ideal for doing graphics!) or to add the
patch I posted previously (which Ton doesn't like :) ).
