I do not like the idea of removing the X so people can't quit that way.

It is not so much using  X  to quit,  but more that it can be clicked 
accidentally because the render screen  X is  just below it.
In truth the x is of little use although it is a standard.
The control characters are also standard. ctrl q, x, v, c, a, p, w, and so forth.
Maybe the problem is not the quit but the overlap, several ways of doing the 
same thing - so how about this alternative.
When the render window is open disable the X quit in the design window.
