I checked with the documentation of ffmpeg building with mingw.
Yes, should work, don't know why it doesn't work for Carsten.
(Maybe some configure-switches are different, but that should be a minor
issue...)

Carsten: could you please

- send "configure.out" located in extern/ffmpeg to me?
- if that doesn't exist:
  Please run:
  ./configure --disable-shared --enable-liba52bin --enable-gpl \
      --disable-network --disable-zlib --disable-vhook --disable-ffserver \
      --disable-ffplay --enable-swscaler --enable-pthreads

  within extern/ffmpeg and tell me, what happens.

I assume, that you do everything within a msys shell...
