Diego and myself have discussed this and we agree that through the 2.4x 
series Blender-CVS has been usable in production for the mostpart. (We 
both used it at least ;) )

It was the case that if there was a bug in a release, users could just 
grab a more recent build with the fix. but with big rewrites going on 
this may not be a good option.

from 2.4 to 2.5 (BMesh for instance) and possibly ghost and UI changes. 
These might break blender, so these wont be merged in. however features 
that arnt likely to break or cause big DNA changes can be added into the 
stable branch and will be tested before 2.44x releases of course.

For my part there are some bad crashes and leaks with the python API in 
2.44. This is probably the last release that will have Blender.NMesh and 
Blender.Mesh modules so Id like users not to be stuck with bugs here 
until 2.5 which could be a while.


This might also make people feel less bad about breaking the trunk for a 
bit while integrating new things (if needs be)
