For effective offline editing, I think it will also be necessary to
implement rendering profiles and to use OpenGL as a rendering engine.
It is impractical to use Blender's internal renderer for live playback
and slow playback limits the usefulness of embedding a scene as a
filmstrip.

Managing a set of different rendering profiles will make it much
easier for an editor to find the right balance between preview quality
and playback speed.
