You do get a file type menu when you do Image -> Save from the image  
window, when you have that set up for the render output. I plan to  
make image window rendering default for the next release since it's  
more usable (options are actually there in menus instead of being  
hidden behind hotkeys) and of course it's a lot nicer than overlapping  
windows, especially when you're doing comping.
