For what it's worth, I had the exact problem on my Suse 10.1 box with
the packman libraries. I eventually broke down and worked around it by
compiling ffmpeg myself. Unfortunately, it involved chasing down quite
a bit of dependencies, figuring out their config settings and
compiling those too :P In fact, I spent most of last sunday on this.
But it now works. I discovered Avidemux in the process
(http://fixounet.free.fr/avidemux/), however, so it wasn't entirely in
vain :)
