That would be a nice feature to have in the new image-browser :-)

There is an quite unknown feature: "Remove/Insert gaps" Shift + Scroll-wheel...
If you place strips on the timeline nonadjacent, drag the frame marker to somewhere in the beginning - 
then this should do the trick.
