I would be happy to have just more spare renders, perhaps Ton's idea of J
and Shift + J can be added for now, be replaced later on when the render
window no longer exists.

That indeed would be the optimum way for fine tuning several render
parameters and compare several images at the same time, loading N image
windows with one render image in each one.

Or just save the last X rendered images as Blender image blocks that
can be browsed and compared (with blending/wiping options would be
nice) and saved from the image window. This would be useful,
particularly if your idea of rendering straight to there instead of a
popped up window ever happens..
