I think I know the cause,

the CVS .blend settings - defaull to 4x4 parts, whereas the 2.41 blender is 1x1

the lowest parts setting I can go is 2x2 of the CVS blend.

This primarily only effects fairly modest scenes complexity -
basically most files in the test suite.
