Has Google Summer of Code discouraged any coders to code for Blender because of
not being paid? It doesn't seem so to me.

There are always people willing to contribute to Blender (Code/Docs) for free,
during spare time, and it's just the case for me. Summer of Docs will be a good
thing for the whole documeentation, and it will not prevent many of us to
contribute further. The good thing is that some could be paid for that, and I'm
very glad for these lucky ones. So I really think that a Summer of Code is a
very good point for the community if the Fundation can afford it. Go, go, go!
:)

Cheers,
