indeed. it just needs some flags to not go crazy with Python, 
which Blender always first gets initialized on startup..

that strange ubuntu binary is now available at 
http://www.blender.org/~antont/basher

- it succesfully crashed another PC too upon EXR loading, at startup even with 
a blend that points to EXR images in a Sequencer strip. otherwise works fine.

yep that is normal. there is a FAQ reply about how to deal with that.

thanks, this seems like a fun one indeed - but luckily is no showstopper, 
especially now that dpx is in cvs and hence build on the other compus here 
now :)
