I always toggle into wireframe mode for such situations (I did this even 
before backbuffered selection--it's not depth testing--was added).  Do 
most other people just disable it?  I can't imagine many people working 
exclusively with backbuffered selection turned off; it's simply too 
cumbersome without selection highlighting (*me cringes at the mention of 
the Evil Feature Suggestion of Doom*).  Almost every tutorial (video and 
text, excluding those written before backbuffered selection was added of 
course) I've seen used backbuffered selection mode, dropping into 
wireframe mode as needed for non-backbuffer selection.
