Don't think you're talking about the same thing, but I'd also like to 
see big, scary pop-up warnings if the render directory doesn't exist or 
can't br written to.  I had numerous students in class this semester 
baffled as to why their renders didn't seem to do anything or seemed to 
be something completely different than what was in their project, only 
to find out either their render directory didn't exist or contained 
files which were not writable.  I don't even think that there's anything 
useful written to the text console (which most of them never think to 
look in).
