I think it would be better to not do it this way at all, but keep the
Ctrl as a general consistent 'snapping key'. It's silly to have these
two separate systems, and we could borrow a little from Maya here.
There could be a list of toggles available outside the transform
'mini-mode' that let you choose what you want to snap to, for
example, grid, point, curve, surface, etc. and then when you hold
down Ctrl, it snaps to whatever you have enabled in your list.

This would be better because it's:
* More consistent - it's the same Ctrl key that everybody already
knows, no hidden keys in special mini-modes where some keys like `
would do different things
* More flexible - As someone who mainly models organic things, I use
the snap to grid only extremely rarely. I might find some of the
other snapping very useful though, and it would be nice for me to be
able to turn off grid snapping and use Ctrl for snapping to points or
edges.
* More extensible - it would provide a more consistent framework so
that when other snapping types are potentially added in the future
(like snapping to curves etc) the same good ol' hotkey keeps working,
and the options to enable new things would be in a familiar place.

cheers

Matt
