Once you start writing all output to an internal blender window,
having a log file becomes a requirement.  Otherwise, when blender
exits, all traces and evidence go away as well.

Having a logging facility is a good idea in any case.  The basic 
concept is not new: a reporting facility that produces messages
with a level ( error, warning, info ) and a facility ( render, python, etc)
for filtering and a timestamp.

The unixy syslogd is one implementation.  Not a bad SOC project...
