For something like this I don't think documentation is
such a huge obstacle. First of all the buttons would
be in the same place, secondly their tooltips could be
modified to reflect their old names.

Technically you should be able to adjust the leading
between any two specific lines. Something similar to
the 'alt left/right' used for kerning might be good
for this (but instead using 'alt up/down'). I don't
suppose this should be too hard to add in. I will try
to look at that this week.

Whether or not adjusting the tracking of individual
parts of the text seperatley is 'overkill' really
depends on what level of typesetting support is
reasonable to expect from Blender. In professional
typesetting it is pretty common to adjust the tracking
of individual parts of your text. I cannot think of
one program that is taken seriously for typesetting
that dosn't support this. On the other hand it may not
be realistic to expect blender to have this level of
support for text editing.
