Not that I know of. Maybe the problem is where to actually find the FAQ
it would be mentioned in, as googling will reveal an overwhelming amount
of graphics hardware problems related to blender. I now found an old
post from 2004 by yourself, regarding the issue. But I needed to know
the problem before I could be specific enough for google, so it was help
too late.
On ubuntu you install nvidia-settings separately. But the solution
reached even me now, so I'm satisfied with that =)
